Scientific vacuum pumps
Laboratory and research applications place different demands on a vacuum pump than industrial processes. Cleanliness, quiet operation, and a compact size often matter more than raw pumping power. The pump is typically part of a larger instrument or system, and its reliability has a direct impact on the success of the entire measurement or research process.
Applications and suitability
Laboratory and research pumps are used both as standalone units and as part of larger instruments and systems. Typical applications include:
- Mass spectrometry and spectroscopy
- Electron microscopy and surface analysis
- Backing pump for turbomolecular pumps
- Cryopump regeneration
- Rotary evaporators and laboratory drying applications
- Particle accelerators and synchrotrons
- Filtration, distillation, and sample preparation
- Chemistry laboratories handling solvents or aggressive gases
What requirements does a laboratory place on a pump
Laboratory and research environments place demands on a pump that aren't always apparent from reading a technical datasheet alone.
Cleaniness is often the single most important criterion. An oil-free pump eliminates the risk of backstreaming into the vacuum chamber or instrument. In many applications, oil contamination can ruin a sample or damage sensitive equipment.
Noise level has a direct impact on working comfort. In a laboratory setting, continuous high noise levels are an issue, and in some measurement applications, mechanical vibration can interfere with the results.
Chemical resistance is essential if the process involves solvents, acids, or bases. Not all pumps are suited to aggressive gases, and the wrong choice of materials will significantly shorten service life.
Size and installability become important when the pump is installed inside or underneath an instrument. Weight and required installation space can be deciding factors.
Laboratory and research pumps
Active Vacuum's range includes four series for laboratory and research use. The right choice depends on flow rate, ultimate pressure, and the specific requirements of the application.
Leybold ECODRY
ECODRY plus is the quietest solution in its class, with flow rates of 25–55 m³/h. Five years of maintenance-free operation and a low noise level make it a suitable choice for research laboratories where operating noise is a critical factor.
Leybold SCROLLVAC
Leybold DIVAC
Leybold - a pioneer in vacuum pumps
Leybold is one of the market leaders in vacuum technology and the industry's longest-standing specialist. Over 170 years of design and development expertise in a single specialty is reflected concretely in the products' performance, service life, and serviceability.
Why Active Vacuum?
Vacuum technology is our specialty, and you always deal with a person who knows vacuum pumps through hands-on field experience across the industry. Besides Leybold sales, we provide vacuum pump servicing, spare parts, and accessories. If your process is critical, we can provide a replacement pump for the duration of a new pump order, service, or repair.
