What requirements does a laboratory place on a pump

Laboratory and research environments place demands on a pump that aren't always apparent from reading a technical datasheet alone.

Cleaniness is often the single most important criterion. An oil-free pump eliminates the risk of backstreaming into the vacuum chamber or instrument. In many applications, oil contamination can ruin a sample or damage sensitive equipment.

Noise level has a direct impact on working comfort. In a laboratory setting, continuous high noise levels are an issue, and in some measurement applications, mechanical vibration can interfere with the results.

Chemical resistance is essential if the process involves solvents, acids, or bases. Not all pumps are suited to aggressive gases, and the wrong choice of materials will significantly shorten service life.

Size and installability become important when the pump is installed inside or underneath an instrument. Weight and required installation space can be deciding factors.
